THE PRINCIPLE OF ENERGY CONVERSION

The phenomenon of one type of mechanical energy converting into another can be observed on the apparatus in the picture. We tie a string around the axis of the disc and lift it up. The disc, while in the lifted position, has some potential energy. If to let go of the disc, it would start to descend while rotating. As the disc descends, the potential energy decreases and the kinetic energy increases. At the end of its descent, the disc has enough kinetic energy to almost return to its original (starting) position. (A part of the energy is used to counter inertia, and therefore the disc can't fully regain its starting position.) After ascending, the disc once again falls, and once again ascends. In this example, as the disc descends, its potential energy converts into kinetic, and vice versa during ascent. Try to explain the same principle on the second animation.
